| Play it Safe |
| |
 |
|
Our children have become the "new victims" in a staggering
number of yearly statistics of crimes against children. It is
estimated that every day 100 children are abducted by strangers
in this country.
Communicate to your children the importance of playing it safe.
Establish ground rules that will increase their awareness
towards the possible dangers that exist. Responsible and
knowledgeable kids will have that winning edge when facing
challenges in life. |

Below are ten basic
"Play It Safe"
rules.
We recommend these
procedures for parents to use when establishing rules for
kids.
-
STRANGERS
- Tell your child that he/she is
not permitted to talk to anyone that you, the parent, do
not know. "Do not talk to strangers" must be a
continuous warning for kids.
-
WALKING AND PLAYING
- Tell your child not to walk
alone. It is a good idea to walk with a friend. They
should also tell you where they are playing. Younger
kids should play close to home.
-
GIFTS
- Tell your child that any gift
must be approved by you before they can accept it. Tell
them not even to touch it until you approve it.
-
OFFERS
- Tell your child that any offer
to give an item to them or to take them somewhere
requires your approval first.
-
UNATTENDED
- Do not leave a child alone at
any time in a public place. Require your child to stay
close to you at all times, even while shopping. Toy
departments are not babysitters.
-
RESTROOMS
- Take very small kids into the
restroom with you - do not consider their sex. Older
kids using a public restroom should be accompanied by an
attendant or if that is not possible, a parent should
stand by the door and give the child a reasonable time
limit.
-
SCREAMING
- Let your child know that it is
OK to scream if someone is forcing them to go with them
against their will.
-
GOOD-BAD PEOPLE
- Let your child know that you
cannot tell whether people are good or bad by looking at
them or just because they smile. If they are not sure if
a person is good or bad, "ask mom or dad."
-
SAME AND SAFE ROUTE
- Always stick to the same route
in traveling to and from school or a friend's house.
-
SAFETY AT HOME
- Always keep doors and windows
locked when home alone. Keep important phone numbers
close by the telephone.
